Creative Schools: The Grassroots Revolution That's Transforming Education

Ken Robinson is one of the world's most influential voices in education, and his 2006 TED Talk on the subject is the most viewed in the organization's history. Now, the internationally recognized leader on creativity and human potential focuses on one of the most critical issues of our time: how to transform the nation's troubled educational system.

At a time when standardized testing businesses are raking in huge profits, when many schools are struggling, and students and educators everywhere are suffering under the strain, Robinson points the way forward. He argues for an end to our outmoded industrial educational system and proposes a highly personalized, organic approach that draws on today's unprecedented technological and professional resources to engage all students, develop their love of learning, and enable them to face the real challenges of the 21st century.

Filled with anecdotes, case histories, and groundbreaking research, Creative Schools will inspire teachers, parents, and policy makers alike to rethink the real nature and purpose of education.

I read this book as part of my curriculum course (I'm enrolled in a Masters program for educational leadership). What I loved: Ken's message is profound and inspirational. His main point is that the current structure of the education system does not support students' natural ability to learn in creative ways. He is against the standards movement and standardized testing because it narrows the curriculum and stifles creativity. He believes that children should learn the content that is most relevant to them, in the pedagogical style that best suits them, and at the pace that is most appropriate for them. My favorite part of the book is the criticism of the PISA results (the global standardized assessment) that are often used by politicians to scare us.What I didn't like: The book relies heavily on the use of example schools that do not face the same restrictions that typical public schools are confronted with.Bottom Line: This book is a must-read. Hopefully this book can increase the support for the creative schools movement and policymakers can begin to see that we are headed in the wrong direction.

Truth! He outlines the very root of the problem. Kids need to be invested in their own education. Learning occurs when passions are unleashed and enthusiasm rules. These global awareness, environmental, community collaboration objectives are stale and unappealing as well as worthless. Please just teach them to read good stuff and write with deep reflection. Math needs to be concrete and relevant. Vigorous curriculum does not equal higher test scores...in fact, to heck with all the standardized testing. It's making kids HATE learning. We need an educational revolution, but we need teachers in charge and we need the government to butt completely out.

The principles and concepts he covers are all good, and I certainly agree with it all, but I just feel like the narrative of the book seemed poorly constructed and didn't offer enough concrete guidance. A whole lot of references are made to other books. I haven't read "Excellent Sheep" yet, but sometimes it felt like Robinson referred to it so much that this whole book is essentially him telling us "you should have read this other book instead."

Ken Robinson has an outstanding grasp of the nuts and bolts of public education, why it's important, and how to make it better. As a teacher, it inspired me. He has practical input for teachers, principals, superintendents, and parents.

Ken Robinson is a must for any parent negotiating school, whether private or public. Empowers you to understand what's going on, and more importantly, how to ascertain what is or isn't working for YOUR child and what you can do to advocate or make change. Recommend it without reservation to every parent I know .

Highly recommended. Also check out Sir Ken Robinson's motivating and curing doses on TedTalks.A desperate need for our current school system today that jails the youngsters. They need a ride! We all do.

great resource for those thinking about opening a private/independent school

I had to get this book for my comprehensive exams later this month. Although I am not an avid reader, this book was an easy read and made a lot of sense. The many examples from schools in other countries helped get the point across that we do need creative schools in the United States.
