I like the way the books go along with the CD tapes. A good way to teach and learn.
Because I've been a sailor for more than 3 decades, for years I've been in-and-out of Arabic-speaking ports. I've watched Dubai transform from a sleepy little town, into a major world city. I started learning Arabic in the 70s, and continued off-and-on, as I transferred to ships in that part of the world. I've been lucky enough to benefit from having *actual* Arabic speakers within reach, but this hasn't always been the case. Some books 'with audio' will only include the audio for the conversational parts of the book. This doesn't help you when you want to learn individual parts of speech, or learn how to pronounce the different forms of a verb. In the beginning, I would pronounce a noun or a verb form the way I *thought* the book was trying to tell me, but then when I actually got to Bahrain, or to the United Arab Emirates, I'd discover that I'd 'guessed' wrong. The Hugo's books came close to letting you hear everything, but the Living Language 'Complete' series tops even them. I'm retired now, and I'm trying to recapture my fluency. The Complete Arabic books have a nice progression from the basics, introducing grammatical subjects gradually, and even *more* importantly, pronounces each and every noun declension or verb conjugation individually. I wish this course had been around in the 70s!Another commentator on this page mentioned as a 'con' that the course didn't teach any of the dialects. Here's my view on that. I don't think that the commentator knew just how many dialects of Arabic there are: there are dozens! The Arabic of Western North Africa -- Maghrebi Arabic -- itself has differences within the countries that make-up this broad term, such as Moroccan or Tunisian Arabic. And the Arabic spoken in Cairo or Lebanon or Dubai or Riyadh differs from Maghrebi Arabic, and from each other, too. If dialects were covered in this course, it would need to be about 5 times as large as it currently is.But, there has developed a type of 'standard' Arabic, used in TV news broadcasts. This is being called 'Formal Spoken Arabic,' and as far as I can tell, that is what is being taught in the Complete Arabic course. This means that the Arabic you learn here, in this course, will be easily understood in virtually every Arab country you could hope to visit; not so if you'd learned a specific dialect.
There are so many language programs out there. I am very glad I got this one. It is very organized and very effective if you follow the program. I feel I must say nothing is easy so if you are looking for something easy studying a language isn't it. If you are willing to focus and really stop and check out how this program is organized you will be amazed at the way they have written this program. It is a step by step building block upon building block. That is the best way to learn. The audio is very good quality. I heard another program's audio and it was terrible, it made me appreciate this programs audio. As with any CDs it will get scratched somehow or the other sooner or later so I have made back up copies of my CDs.I have spent a few minutes to make up a sheet for this program. It is a check off sheet. I find this is a great help in keeping track of my studies. I do this because along with this program I do some other online studies too to supplement my studies. I especially had to go outside of this program to get help with the script. I think some people will be great without doing that but I am kind of an extremely thorough person and like to overdo things but that works for me. On this study check off sheet I just followed the course and made it. DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYONE WHO SAYS THIS PROGRAM IS NOT GOOD. This really is an awesome program and you will get back even more than you put in. The price cant be beat. The set up of the program makes it very easy to follow and retain. Do not forget to go to their website and play the games and use the flash cards. You will even retain more that way too.If you wish copy and paste the check off sheet i made below and follow it. Just check off each that apply as you go along the program. Each lesson has two sections. For example lesson 1 has a section titled Vocabulary Builder 1 and another section titled Vocabulary Builder 2, seems like all the lessons are like this. I actually didn't check all the lessons didn't have the time but what I checked that is what I saw. The check off sheet may not make sense to you when you look at it right now but when you get the program and start using it and see how the program is set up it will make sense. In each section there are a series of lessons building upon each other. I do a check off sheet for each lesson. It feels pretty good to check off what I have done and even better to sign off at the end when I know I have nailed the lessons. Yea. I sign my check off sheet. It feels good to know its done and sealed in my memory. So have fun and best wishes on your arabic studies.LIVING LANGUAGE Check off study sheetName_____________________What Language?______________What level of living language? I wish I would have bought en this year's ago. I have not tried to learn anything g from the books yet. I have just been playing the CDS in the car while driving. I drive for a living so that makes for lots of practice. I learned more from this CD in one week then I have from my arabic speaking husband in the past 5 years :)
I am very happy with the set. I just finished the intermediate book and am moving to advanced. I knew only how to read and write going in, so I skipped that book. Beginner and intermediate books have been very well organized and helpful. There is enough repetition to help you cement what you've learned as you go forward. I also like to make my own flash cards as I go through the material -about one lesson per day- and the organization of the book is very clear and conducive to that. I feel like I am now at the stage where I am making quick progress and that is a great feeling to have, especially because some parts (at the beginning for sure) of learning a language can feel very slow.As far as dialects, the book doesn't mention them and I am planning on learning one at a later date.I also did not use the CDs really, and I still think the books were an excellent value.I included a picture of one of my recent flash cards. I try to do about 5 a week, (based on the book- vocab with grammar notes occasionally on the flip side) and for me, it is an essential part of the learning process. I have not even looked at their app because I am very satisfied with this method. The intermediate book took me between two and three months
